Lighting a Big Green Egg
I’ve gone back and forth on the best way to light my Big Green Egg, but lately I’ve really settled in on a single method. First here are some methods I’ve used in the past.
Big Green Egg Starter Cubes
I started off using these starter cubes because I got some in the package deal i used to buy my Egg. My experience was inconsistent with these. They were usually fine, but sometimes it would take FOREVER to get going. If you’re going low and slow it isn’t that big of a deal, but when I’m grilling over direct heat I’d rather not wait all day to get my fire going.
Weber Chimney with Starter Cubes
I have not done this in a while, but honestly it’s a fine method if you are grilling foot over direct heat. Fill up your chimney with lump charcoal and place it over a lit cube. Once the chimney is raring hot dump the coals in and you are ready to grill. The main draw back to this method is if you want to go low and slow. I don’t recommend this method if you are doing a low and slow cook.
TackLife Heat Gun
For me, I’ve found using a heat gun gives me the best of both worlds. If I’m grilling, I can stoke the fire a bit once lit to get it nice and hot. If I’m prepping for a low and slow cook, then I just ease off much sooner. While this isn’t the exact model that I have it is the latest version.
